Bloom runs a real Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion simulation: a slow chemical pattern of spiral waves grows across a field and never settles. The moving fronts fire scale-quantised notes that swell in as evolving string pads, so the instrument plays itself, indefinitely, no two passes alike.

Reaction-diffusion

Two chemicals diffuse and react on a toroidal grid, forming the rotating spiral waves of an excitable medium. The leading crest of each front fires a note, so the texture is sparse and ever-changing rather than a wall of sound.

Self-playing string pads

Each fired note blooms in as a detuned-saw string pad through an ensemble chorus, a filter that breathes with the pattern, and reverb. Set-and-forget: it keeps itself alive and eases in from silence on load.

Tend the garden

Steer the flow, density, and pattern; set the root and scale; shape tone, shimmer, swell, and space. Click the membrane to drop chemical and seed new growth. Every note can be sent out as MIDI to play your other gear.
