Gravity is the sequencer.

Mercury hangs 88 mercury tilt switches from a shared flexible rail, one per piano key, each a damped pendulum swinging under gravity. A note kicks a pendulum; when it swings past its contact, the note fires. Hard strikes send a ripple down the rail that sets neighbours swinging.

Pendulum physics

Eighty-eight damped pendulums on a geometric frequency gradient, firing on a rising-edge contact crossing. A soft kick rings one switch; a hard kick cascades across dozens.

Morphable voice

Each contact strikes a modal voice that morphs from struck glass and bronze to a bowed, glass-harmonica sustain, fattened by a sub-octave saw and shaped by deep, slow modulation.

It plays your rig back

Every fire can emit a MIDI note, so Mercury sequences your other instruments. Sweep the rack with the mouse to play it by hand.
